Working in collaboration with local, national, and international facilities, the orthopedic medicine and surgery specialists at REOrthopaedics, Inc., in San Diego have spearheaded numerous scientific investigations that have led to practical treatment solutions bringing immediate benefits to patients and families throughout the world.
Primary bone and soft tissue tumors arise from the cells comprising muscle, tendon, ligaments, bone, cartilage and the vessels and nerves supporting them. However, the broad category of bone and soft tissue tumors also includes those tumors which have spread from other organ systems. Regardless of the origin of the tumor, treatment depends on a variety of factors, including the cell type, location, size, and whether it is a cancer or simply an abnormal growth of normal cells. At REOrthopaedics, Inc., our surgeons have exceptional experience treating both benign and malignant soft tissue and bone tumors at their San Diego facility, near Los Angeles. A tumor is defined as a lump or mass of tissue that develops when cells divide uncontrollably. A bone tumor involves an abnormal growth in the bone. Many times the cause for the growth is usually unknown. Aggressive bone tumors can weaken the bone to cause a fracture and, if cancerous, spread to other parts of the body to injure the host.
Most bone tumors are benign growths of normal, non-cancerous cells. It is important for patients with these bone tumors to be thoroughly evaluated by oncologic surgeons like the doctors at our San Diego facility, in close proximity to Los Angeles. Although benign tumors pose little threat to the patient’s general health, their rapid growth and destructive behavior are of great concern. A biopsy is usually recommended, followed by excision and close follow up. The recurrence rates for the most aggressive, benign bone tumors run between 10 percent and 20 percent and may require further surgery to affect cure.
Malignant bone tumors are cancers and require considerable expertise to achieve a successful outcome. Again, treatment depends on the cell type, location(s) and size. However, bone cancers are usually not curable without surgery.
Limb-salvage surgery for bone tumors is very complex, requiring the special skills and experience found in the doctors at our San Diego office. Here, the challenge is to remove the entire tumor while still preserving form and function. The bone that is removed is often replaced with a bone graft or an internal prosthesis made of metal and other materials. Most patients are candidates for limb-salvage rather than ablative surgery (amputation). Ask your surgeon to explain the best way to remove your tumor and keep as much use of the involved arm or leg as possible.
At REOrthopaedics, Inc., Dr. George Cierny and Dr. Doreen DiPasquale provide exceptional care and individualized treatment plans for patients with a benign or malignant bone tumor. Soft tissue tumors are distinguished from bone tumors in that they primarily develop from cells with origins within fat, muscle, nerve, blood vessel, or appendages of the skin (sweat glands, hair follicles, etc). Since soft tissue tumors can be benign or malignant, a biopsy is an important first step in planning treatment. Malignant tumors, because they are cancerous and have the potential to spread to other areas of the body, require a more extensive and individualized treatment plan.
Drs. George Cierny and Doreen DiPasquale treat both benign and malignant soft tissue tumors at their facility in San Diego near the Los Angeles area. Malignant tumors are, in most cases, incurable without surgery. Treatment is based on a number of factors:
